IN 1979, ROBIN BUGENSKE ESTABLISHED SPECIALTY LUBRICANTS CORP. AS A MARKETER OF BULK INDUSTRIAL AND AUTOMOTIVE LUBRICANTS. But it was the packaging solution that followed that changed it all.

In 1987, a wheel manufacturer approached Bugenske to source a specialty lubricant for a run flat rim for military Humvees. He knew that HUSK-ITT CORPORATION of California developed the ideal lubricant that was rubber-compatible and temperature-tolerant. But there was one problem: The grease moved around in the tire, causing imbalance.

Bugenske proposed putting the grease in a portion pouch, or a Lube-Pak®, as it was later coined. Two Lube-Paks were fastened to each side of the rim to keep the tire balanced. When the tire was shot out by the enemy, the tire ran on the inner rim and burst the pouch, lubricating the run flat assembly. This allowed the soldier to continue driving out of harm’s way.

When the contract packager was unable to produce the Lube-Paks without leakers, Bugenske didn’t hesitate to take matters into his own hands, working from his basement to fulfill the order.

That contract was SLC’s introduction into the custom packaging business. Today, the Lube-Pak remains SLC’s most popular package for liquids and semi-solids.
